Technology / PT Plus Platform

The engineering behind PT Plus.

PT Plus is not a feature list. It is a signal processing platform built from the ground up for piezoelectric sensing. Adaptive algorithms, real-time calibration, and embedded intelligence running on a constrained microcontroller at under 10 microamps. Making all of that work together, in every material, in every environment, at a cost that fits OEM products, is the engineering challenge that defines everything we do.

From principle to platform

The piezoelectric effect generates a signal. PT Plus makes it intelligent.

The piezo principle is straightforward: pressure creates charge. But the raw signal from a piezo disc is just the starting point. It is noisy, affected by temperature, material variation, vibration, and environmental interference. Making that signal into a reliable, sensitive, real-time switching decision, consistently, in any environment, at micro-amp power levels, requires a dedicated engineering platform. That platform is PT Plus.

Signal intelligence
Generating data. Analyzing data. Making decisions.
We generate data points from the piezoelectric response and analyze them using statistical models, adaptive algorithms, and pattern recognition built on over 20 years of experience. Every signal is evaluated against historical baselines and real-time environmental context to answer one question: is this a deliberate activation, or is it noise?
Detail

The algorithms run continuously, filtering and differentiating in real time. Vibration from a running engine produces a different signal signature than a finger press. Rain hitting a surface looks different from a gloved hand. Temperature shifts are compensated before they affect sensitivity.

The system scans, analyzes, calibrates against the current environmental baseline, and responds to a valid activation with zero perceptible delay. The algorithms adapt to the specific installation, the specific material, the specific operating conditions.

This logic is embedded code, purpose-built for piezoelectric sensing, running on a constrained microcontroller. Not a general-purpose signal processing library. Engineered specifically for piezo, refined through thousands of iterations.

Power engineering
Full signal processing at 5 to 10 microamps.
Continuous scanning, calibration, noise filtering, environmental compensation, and decision logic. All at 5 to 10 microamps total standby. For an entire panel with dozens of keys. Not per key. Total.
Detail

Not achieved by selecting a low-power MCU from a catalog. Requires optimization at every level: sampling strategy, algorithm efficiency, sleep/wake management, analog front-end design, memory allocation, energy budgeting to the microjoule.

The cost constraint compounds the challenge. Components must fit volume OEM pricing. A high-performance processor could simplify the power problem but would be prohibitively expensive.

Delivering this combination of performance, power efficiency, and cost is where dedicated R&D and years of deployment translate into a capability that is very difficult to replicate.

Material engineering
Every material is different. Every part is different.
The piezoelectric signal is shaped by everything between the finger and the sensor. Surface material, thickness, density, coupling method, and how all of these shift with temperature. PT Plus calibrates against the actual material properties of the installed part, not theoretical spec sheet values.
Detail

An injection-molded part varies shot to shot. A stamped part varies across the batch. These are normal manufacturing tolerances. PT Plus calibrates against the actual installed part. Critical for products where the surface is manufactured by the customer.

RNC analyzes and helps optimize the customer's own part production where it affects sensing. Injection molding parameters, stamping tolerances, surface treatments.

Every new material is an engineering process: characterization, mechanical modeling, signal analysis, algorithm tuning, validation. We have done this across stainless steel, aluminium, glass, polycarbonate, porcelain, solid surface, automotive plastics, and more.

Architecture
One platform. From a single switch to a 45-key panel.
One MCU manages all activation areas. Same processor, same power budget, same signal intelligence applied to every key. The architecture scales without multiplying power, cost, or complexity.
Detail

PT Plus is available on individual switches from 22mm and as standard on all panels and keypads. The same signal processing, the same adaptive algorithms, the same calibration architecture apply regardless of scale.

For applications where the advanced signal processing is not needed, RNC also offers non-MCU switch configurations. Simpler, lower-cost, and still built with RNC's mechanical design and build quality.

Surface integration
Why PT Plus enables through-surface activation.
Sensing through 3mm of stainless steel or 6mm of solid surface requires far more than a piezo disc attached to the back. Without advanced signal processing, behind-surface sensing is unreliable or impossible. With PT Plus, it works consistently.
Detail

PT Plus adjustable sensitivity compensates for material type and thickness. Real-time calibration maintains performance as the material expands and contracts with temperature. Signal processing distinguishes a deliberate press from vibration, water contact, or incidental impact.

The activation area is defined by the algorithm, not by the physical size of the piezo element. Multiple independently configured touch zones on a single unbroken surface.

This is the technology that makes RNC's Integration Components product line possible. A customer's surface becomes an intelligent touch interface.

Development
A platform that keeps getting better.
PT Plus is an active R&D platform, not a finished product. RNC invests continuously in improving every layer: mechanical design, electronics optimization, board design, and signal processing logic. Current development areas include XY position sensing, haptic feedback, enhanced self-diagnostics, and next-generation adaptive algorithms.
